Early Bird Weekend is a Double Header for Hunter Robbins
Normally, a driver will have a first race of the year and will have to wait a week...a few weeks…maybe even a month or longer before getting back on track.
Hunter Robbins won’t have to worry about that. He plans to make a little bit more of a splash than usual during his first race weekend of the year. This weekend, he’ll be competing in the Early Bird event at Birmingham International Speedway, where he’s running two feature events and hoping for two victories.
“It will be a busy weekend,” said Robbins. “I will be jumping back and forth between the two cars (a Pro Late Model and a Super Late Model), and there is a big horsepower difference. Every time I get back into the Pro Late Model after driving the Super Late Model it feels like I am driving a go kart or something. It just feels like you are just puttin’ along the straightaways just waiting to get to the turns at the track.”
Birmingham is a track that is pretty familiar to Robbins, and it is one that is not too far from his hometown of Montgomery, Alabama.
“I actually really like Birmingham,” said Robbins. “I know a lot of people don’t enjoy racing there, but I do. It is really fun to drive. I really enjoy just hanging right there by the wall, all the way around. It’s definitely not a boring track, because you really have to focus on your driving. It is kind of a hard track to drive in a way, but that is what makes it fun.”
In preparation for the event, Robbins has been testing both of his cars in order to improve his chances of bringing home both wins. He’s got a brand new machine and a proven racecar at his disposal, and both are ready to roll.
“We came out here last week with our Super Late Model. It is a brand new Grand American Race Car. It ran really good at the test, and we are really pleased with that car. We think that we have a really good chance at the Early Bird. It was just really fast, probably one of the best cars that I have ever driven.
“Our other car is the Port City Pro Late Model. It is handling good, but we have been having some carburetor and engine problems. Once we get that straightened out, I think that we will be really good for that race as well.”

The Super Late Models have more horsepower than the Pro Late Models. That requires a slightly different style of driving to be successful in both cars, but having to be versatile doesn’t seem to bother Robbins too much.
“The two cars drive pretty differently,” added Robbins. “But we have both cars driving really well. I think that we have a good shot at both races this weekend. It would be something to wrap it up with a double win, but I think that we should at least have double top-fives. I am counting on that. We got the cars handling really well and running fast times, so we will just have to wait until this weekend and see what we have.”
Hunters Robbins’ racing season will get underway with a double header of Pro Late Models and Super Late Models on February

24th at Birmingham International Raceway as part of the Early Bird weekend. The Early Bird event will get underway Sunday, February 25th, at 1pm.
